20% of GA accidents are weather-related. What about eVTOLs?

Weather is one of the most unpredictable variables in aviation, and eVTOL manufacturers are aware of its effects when designing highly stable aircraft. NTSB data reveals that around 20% of general aviation accidents cite weather as a cause or contributing factor. Of these, over 50% identified wind as the specific factor1. In addition, urban microclimates can produce wind gusts near tall buildings that exceed safe operational thresholds for light aircraft. These microclimates, combined with sudden changes in conditions like wind shear or rain, have led to manufacturers racing to develop adaptive flight systems and predictive algorithms to better equip eVTOLs for navigating these urban weather hazards and maintain the highest levels of aviation safety.

For aviation insurers, weather risks are likely to be a key consideration in underwriting eVTOL operations. Though advanced weather technologies are already available from third party companies, unpredictable urban microclimates will place a strong focus on the operator’s ability to implement a comprehensive approach to weather risk management across pilot training, operational procedures, and diversion planning.
