This mantra has powered a century of aerospace industry progress. Build something, test it, sometimes it flies, sometimes it doesn’t, both outcomes are useful. In just a few decades it took us from rudimentary canvas-covered flying machines to reclining seats in wide-body jets.
But today’s eVTOL companies have their future staked on public confidence to fly electric. The world is keeping a very close eye on flight test regimes, watching for even the slightest sign of anything but the highest levels of safety. Relatively minor incidents during prototype testing make front page news, so rather than moving fast and breaking things, OEMs are being very careful.
But in the process they’re collecting millions of data points from each flight across hundreds of metrics, showing exactly how the aircraft performs, identifying and resolving the smallest anomalies as soon as they emerge.
Where historically underwriters look for the number of successful flight hours, eVTOL OEMs can draw additional confidence from their data and bear a new mantra: moving fast and monitoring everything.
