Take off like a helicopter, cruise like a plane: achieving eVTOL transition

One of the most compelling reasons to fly on an eVTOL is the ability to take off like a helicopter and cruise like an aeroplane. This capability is a cornerstone of the Advanced Air Mobility value proposition, opening up thousands of urban and hard-to-reach routes across the world. It’s easy to draft the business case, but not so easy to engineer an aircraft that can reliably switch between horizontal and vertical flight, known as transition.

April 2024 saw another milestone for AAM when BETA Technologies1 completed a manned transition flight of their A250 eVTOL, a great day on the journey toward certification in 2026. Others have completed successful remotely-piloted transition test flights, but having a pilot on board is a significant step forward.

When considering urban operations, the insurance underwriter’s mind immediately turns to heightened liability exposure associated with flying near buildings and dense populations. Therefore, demonstrating the highest levels of reliability and safety during transition will be fundamental in the bid for AAM insurance, especially where use cases carry a more urban focus.
